Amaravati, April 15: In a significant step toward improving disaster preparedness, the Andhra Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) to reduce deaths caused by lightning strikes, especially in rural areas.
The agreement was formalized at the State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) office by Managing Director Prakhar Jain and NRSC Deputy Director Dr. Aparna, in the presence of senior officials and scientists from both organisations.
Officials stated that the collaboration aims to minimise the loss of life and property by strengthening disaster response systems and enhancing preparedness across the state.
As part of the initiative, APSDMA and NRSC will work together to identify lightning-prone areas through advanced data analysis and satellite-based monitoring.
The project will also include detailed risk assessments and the development of targeted prevention strategies. A key focus will be on improving early warning systems to ensure timely alerts reach vulnerable communities, particularly in rural regions where lightning strikes often prove fatal.
APSDMA officials expressed confidence that the partnership will significantly improve public safety measures and contribute to building a more robust and responsive disaster management framework in Andhra Pradesh.
The initiative comes amid growing concerns over the rising number of lightning-related incidents in India, highlighting the need for technological interventions and coordinated efforts to mitigate natural hazards.
