Guwahati:- In Assam, the flood situation remains critical as incessant rainfall continues to batter several parts of the state. Ten more flood-related deaths were reported yesterday, taking the overall death toll to 41. According to official reports, more than 6 lakh 40 thousand people have been affected across 40 revenue circles, with large areas submerged and normal life severely disrupted.
Relief and rescue operations are continuing on a war footing in the worst-affected districts. Teams of the State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force, district administration and other agencies are engaged in evacuating stranded people, distributing relief materials and providing medical assistance. Authorities are also operating relief camps and community kitchens for displaced families.
Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra and its tributaries, continue to flow above the danger level at multiple locations, aggravating the flood situation. Continuous rainfall has inundated roads, damaged embankments and affected agricultural land, while communication and transport services have been disrupted in many areas.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across Assam over the next three to four days, raising concerns of further flooding and landslides.
In view of the forecast, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority has issued an advisory urging residents, particularly those living in low-lying and hilly areas, to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and strictly follow weather updates and instructions issued by the local administration.
In Guwahati, authorities have issued traffic advisories, warning that heavy rainfall could lead to waterlogging, traffic congestion and localized disruptions in several parts of the city. Commuters have been advised to plan their journeys carefully and exercise caution while travelling.
Reviewing the flood situation yesterday, Chief Secretary Dr. Ravi Kota held a meeting with officials of the worst-affected districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
He assessed the preparedness of various government departments and directed officials to ensure uninterrupted distribution of relief materials, speedy restoration of essential services such as electricity and drinking water, and immediate repair of damaged roads and other public infrastructure. He also stressed the need for close coordination among departments to ensure timely assistance reaches all affected people.
