New Delhi, March 3: World Wildlife Day is observed every year on March 3 to celebrate wild animals and plants and to recognize their unique role in maintaining ecological balance.
The day underscores the urgent need to conserve biodiversity for the well-being of the planet and humanity.
Marking the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings through a series of social media posts, reiterating the importance of protecting the planet’s rich faunal diversity.
He emphasized that wildlife enriches ecosystems and sustains life systems across the globe. Highlighting India’s cultural ethos, the Prime Minister noted that Indian scriptures advocate for the welfare of all living beings and inspire compassion and conservation.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, described World Wildlife Day as a celebration of Earth’s incredible biodiversity.
He stressed that protecting wildlife is not merely an environmental obligation but a shared responsibility that requires collective action across society.
In a post on social media platform X, Yadav acknowledged the growing threats to ecosystems, including habitat loss, climate change, poaching and pollution.
“We remain committed to not just conserving what we have, but also recovering key species for ecosystem restoration,” he said.
India’s Wildlife Conservation Milestones:-
India is home to nearly 8% of the world’s recorded biodiversity, despite covering only about 2.4% of the global land area. The country has made significant progress in wildlife conservation:
India hosts over 75% of the world’s wild tiger population, with the latest estimates placing the number above 3,000. The population of Asiatic lions, once critically endangered, has steadily increased in Gujarat’s Gir landscape.
Successful programs such as Project Tiger, Project Elephant, and recent species recovery efforts for gharials and vultures reflect sustained conservation initiatives.
Over 5% of India’s geographical area is under protected areas, including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and conservation reserves.
World Wildlife Day also serves as a reminder that biodiversity conservation is closely linked to climate action, sustainable development and human survival.
As global environmental challenges intensify, leaders called for stronger partnerships and public participation to safeguard natural heritage for future generations.
The observance reinforces that protecting wildlife is not only about saving species, but about securing a balanced and resilient planet.
