The theme of World Meteorological Day 2024 is “At the Frontline of Climate Action.”

New Delhi: Every year March 23, is observed as World Meteorological Day to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

The day highlights the essential role that the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHS) plays towards the safety and well-being of society.

Besides that, the day also highlights the Earth’s importance, people’s behaviour, and their connection with each other.

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2024 is therefore “At the Frontline of Climate Action.” As we all know Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization.

The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now. Sustainable Development Goal 13 commits us to “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.”

Highlighting the importance of the day, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo said National Meteorological and Hydrological Services – WMO Members – are key players in our fight against climate change.

She added that Climate Action means different things to different people. But all agree that it is indispensable. And it is urgent. And it is a call for everybody. We must all pull in the same direction.

“In the face of unprecedented environmental challenges, we are not mere observers. Rather, we are called to be game changers.
Our role as scientists and advocates for the planet has never been more crucial”.

“Climate chaos threatens every region, country and community on earth. So, all of us must unite at the frontlines of climate action” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

“Together we must build a future where we have better adapted to the realities of our changing climate, limiting damage when extreme weather strikes, including by protecting every person on earth with an early-warning system by 2027” he noted.

History World Meteorological Department:

On March 23, 1950, the World Meteorological Organisation Convention came into force and became a UN specialised agency in 1951 for meteorology, operation hydrology, and related geophysical sciences.

Ever since WMO has been observing World Meteorological Day with the number of themes each year.

WMO provides the framework for international cooperation to advance meteorological, climatological, hydrological, and related environmental services, to improve the well-being of all.

The agency claimed that by 2030, all nations, especially the most vulnerable to other environmental events; and underpin their sustainable development through the best possible services, whether over land, at sea or in the air.
