In a candid conversation with The Environment, MD, Formica India, Mr Ajay Khurana discussed many facets of new technologies and policies intervention for reducing carbon emissions for a sustainable future for our planet.
Can you provide details on innovative recycling technologies or processes you use?
At Formica, we have Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) systems, and our plant operates as a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility, ensuring that no wastewater is released into the environment. For hazardous waste, we strictly follow the guidelines set by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and dispose of waste through authorized vendors, receiving certificates to confirm compliant waste disposal.
Are there any recent investments or projects that showcase your commitment to reducing
carbon emissions?
We have recently made a significant change by transitioning our fuel source from coal to biomass pellets. This switch is part of our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and aligns with our broader sustainability goals.
How do you collaborate with suppliers to ensure sustainability throughout your supply chain?
Collaboration with suppliers is critical to our sustainability strategy. We engage with them to adopt environmentally friendly practices, including reducing waste, optimizing logistics to lower emissions, and ensuring responsible sourcing of raw materials.
Formica holds Green Guard and Green Guard Gold certifications, as well as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification. To ensure sustainability, we source FSC-certified products from suppliers who are also FSC certified, ensuring that our supply chain adheres to strict environmental standards.
Are there any innovative technologies or practices you are adopting to meet this goal?
We have obtained an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification from NEMHO, which supports our commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility. We regularly monitor our environmental impact and take proactive actions to meet our sustainability goals.
How do you anticipate government policies influencing your carbon neutrality efforts?
Formica is deeply committed to sustainability and environmental protection. We strictly adhere to GPCB regulations and continuously monitor air, noise, and water emissions to ensure compliance and minimize our environmental footprint, This approach ensures that we not only comply but also lead in sustainability initiatives.
How does Formica ensure the sustainability of raw materials used in its products?
We have an in-house laboratory where every lot of raw material is tested before it is accepted. We ensure that all raw materials meet the standard parameters and guidelines of both local legislation and global standards. Our suppliers are regularly evaluated, and we prioritize purchasing from those who are dedicated to sustainability.
What criteria do you follow to source materials responsibly and sustainably?
Formica follows a comprehensive set of criteria, including environmental impact assessments, supplier certifications, and material traceability. These measures ensure that our sourcing practices are responsible and sustainable, contributing to the overall integrity of our products.
How does Formica balance economic growth with environmental sustainability?
We believe that economic growth and environmental sustainability are not mutually exclusive. By focusing on sustainable innovation, developing eco-friendly products, and optimizing resource efficiency, we achieve cost savings that drive financial growth. This approach proves that sustainability can be a catalyst for profitability.
Are there any specific initiatives that exemplify your commitment to a circular economy?
We are actively contributing to a circular economy by using biomass pellets, which are primarily made from sawdust and agricultural waste. This initiative not only reduces waste but also promotes the use of renewable resources in our operations.
What future trends or developments are you preparing for to maintain your leadership in
sustainability?
Formica is preparing for future trends such as the increased demand for sustainable building materials, the rise of green certifications, and the global shift towards reducing carbon footprints. We are investing in research and development to stay ahead of these trends, including exploring alternative raw materials, advancing our energy efficiency initiatives, and enhancing supply chain transparency. By staying agile and forward-thinking, we aim to maintain our leadership in sustainability.
