Germany experiences second hottest year 2022, recorded average temperature 10.5 degrees

Berlin: Germany has experienced hottest year 2022, with an average temperature of 10.5 degree Celsius, a new record high, the National Meteorological Service, DWD said in a statement.

“Germany experienced an extraordinary weather year in 2022” service said

“There was a new record for the duration of sunshine. With a precipitation deficit of around 15 percent, the past twelve months have been very dry in this country” DED noted.

According to DWD calculations, the mean annual temperature was 10.5 degrees Celsius (°C). 2022 is therefore 2.3 degrees above the value of the internationally valid reference period 1961 – 1990. In 2022, all months were too warm compared to the average of the reference period 1961-1990.

In a long-term comparison, August was the second warmest and October with 2001 was even the warmest corresponding month.

Tobias Fuchs, Director of Climate and Environment at the German Weather Service ( DWD) said “The record-warm year 2022 should be a renewed incentive for all of us to finally move from talking to action on climate protection”

“So far we have not managed to effectively step on the greenhouse gas brake. Global warming is progressing almost unchecked” he added.

According to the DWD , first place is still possible after evaluating all the data. Several intense heat waves in June and July led to temperature records across Europe.

Germany aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and to be climate neutral by 2045.

However, Europe’s largest economy remains a long way from achieving its mid-term climate targets, according to a report by the German government’s Expert Council on climate issues published at the beginning of November.

“The emission reduction rates achieved so far are far from sufficient to meet the climate protection targets for 2030,” Council member Thomas Heimer said.

“The annual reduction of emissions would have to double compared to the historical development of the last 10 years.”
