New Delhi:- World Nature Conservation Day is being observed across the globe today (July 28) to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect the environment and conserve natural resources for future generations. The day highlights the importance of preserving forests, rivers, oceans, wildlife and biodiversity.
Celebrating under the theme, “Protecting Nature for a Sustainable Future”, the day will also encourage sustainable practices to address the growing challenges posed by climate change, pollution and habitat destruction.
The observance serves as a reminder that healthy ecosystems are essential for clean air, safe drinking water, food security and human well-being. Governments, conservation organisations, educational institutions and communities organise awareness campaigns, tree plantation drives, clean-up activities and educational programmes to promote environmental protection.
Recognizing the critical need for global environmental action, the United Nations General Assembly designated July 28th as a day to highlight the importance of safeguarding nature. This date also marks the anniversary of the adoption of the World Heritage Convention, underscoring the significance of protecting our planet’s natural wonders.
The idea of marking July 28 as World Nature Conservation Day gained recognition after the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) highlighted the need for global action to conserve nature in 1997. Since then, the day has been observed to encourage individuals, communities and governments to adopt sustainable lifestyles and protect the Earth’s natural heritage.
According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, more than 47,000 species are currently threatened with extinction worldwide due to habitat loss, climate change, pollution, overexploitation and invasive species. Scientists estimate that nearly one million plant and animal species face the risk of extinction in the coming decades if immediate conservation measures are not taken.
Iconic species such as tigers, elephants, rhinos, orangutans, sea turtles, corals and several amphibian species continue to face serious threats despite ongoing conservation efforts.
The world conservation day event in the modern era is associated with various international milestones, such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), the Kuning-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and others.
Interestingly, 2026 is also the halfway point to the year 2030, the milestones for the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) report and the half-way point to the year 2030 when countries will be reaching their goal of protecting at least 30 per cent of Earth’s land and ocean ecosystems (the “30×30” initiative) and halving the global footprint of production and consumption.
Environmental experts stress that protecting biodiversity is critical for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring sustainable development. They underline that simple actions such as reducing plastic waste, conserving water and energy, planting trees, protecting wildlife habitats and adopting eco-friendly lifestyles can collectively make a significant difference.
On World Nature Conservation Day, people around the world are urged to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the planet and preserving its rich biodiversity for present and future generations.
