Shekha Jheel declared Ramsar Site in Uttar Pradesh

Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh : In a significant boost to India’s environmental conservation efforts, the Shekha Jheel Bird Sanctuary has been officially designated as a Ramsar site, an international recognition for wetlands of global importance.

The announcement marks a major milestone, making it the 12th Ramsar site in Uttar Pradesh and the 99th in India.

Making an announcement, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said that it brings a boost for local livelihoods and global biodiversity, along with water and climate security and marks “India’s 99th, bringing us closer to a historic century”.

“With PM Modi leading India’s ecosystem restoration mission, our commitment towards conservation of wetlands and natural habitat of animals, particularly that of birds, has yet again received a thumbs up from the global community,” the Minister added.

Highlighting the ecological importance of the site, Shri Yadav said Shekha Jheel acts as a crucial stopover on the Central Asian Flyway, providing a vital habitat for migratory birds such as the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork and various ducks during the winter season.

The Minister also encouraged people to visit the site.

The inclusion of Shekha Jheel in the prestigious Ramsar list highlights its ecological significance, particularly as a critical stopover along the Central Asian Flyway, one of the world’s major migratory bird corridors.

Each winter, the wetland hosts a rich diversity of avian species, including the Bar-headed Goose, Painted Stork, and numerous species of ducks, making it a vital habitat for migratory birds.

The designation also underscores India’s growing commitment to wetland conservation, water security, and climate resilience.

With this addition, the country moves closer to achieving a landmark milestone of 100 Ramsar sites.

As the global community intensifies its focus on environmental protection, the inclusion of Shekha Jheel reinforces India’s role as a key player in safeguarding vital ecosystems for future generations.
