Millions unite worldwide for Earth Day 2026 with focus on Renewable Energy

New Delhi: Millions of people across the globe came together on Wednesday to celebrate Earth Day 2026, an annual event dedicated to environmental protection, sustainability, and urgent climate action.

This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” placed a strong spotlight on renewable energy and the role of collective action in shaping a greener future.

From large-scale rallies in major cities to grassroots initiatives in small communities, individuals, organizations, and governments marked the day with tree-planting drives, clean-up campaigns, climate awareness marches, and policy discussions.

Hailing the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the earth is our mother and the welfare of humanity lies in its protection.

“It is not only the responsibility of all of us to protect it, but also our sacred resolution to future generations.The trees and forests in which the poles of the universe stand. Let the earth not rise up as a milking cow. Obeisance to the earth” he said.

Echoing the same sentiment, Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh said that the earth is our mother and the welfare of humanity lies in its protection. It is not only the responsibility of all of us to protect it, but also our sacred resolution to future generations.

“The trees and forests in which the poles of the universe stand. Let the earth not rise up as a milking cow. Obeisance to the earth” he said.

Ranjeet Barthakur, Social entrepreneur and Founder, Balipara Foundation called to protect the environment for further generations.

“Earth Day is every day. Nature has already invested in us through diverse natural assets. Take the example of bamboo, one of the fastest-growing and most regenerative resources on the planet” he said.

Mr Barthakur further added as natural capital, bamboo not only sequesters carbon and restores degraded land, but also supports livelihoods, sustainable industries, and climate resilience.

Valuing such ecosystems is not just about economics, but about recognising that our future depends on how we invest in and protect nature today.

Environmental groups emphasized that the transition to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower is no longer optional but essential to combating climate change.

According to the United Nations, global carbon emissions must be significantly reduced within this decade to avoid the most severe impacts of global warming.

Experts say that achieving this goal will require not only government policies but also active participation from businesses and citizens.

In India and other developing nations, Earth Day events highlighted the dual challenge of economic growth and environmental protection. Activists called for increased investment in clean energy infrastructure and sustainable practices, while also ensuring equitable access to resources.

“Young people are driving change like never before,” said a spokesperson from EarthDay.org, the organization that coordinates global Earth Day activities. “This year’s theme reminds us that the power to protect the planet lies in our collective hands.”

As the world faces rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and biodiversity loss, Earth Day 2026 served as both a celebration and a stark reminder: the time to act is now, and the responsibility is shared by all.
