Varanasi imposes ₹250 fine for spitting in public to boost cleanliness

Varanasi: In a major step towards improving cleanliness and hygiene, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has announced strict penalties for spitting, littering, and other unhygienic activities in public places.

The move aligns with the Uttar Pradesh Solid Waste Management and Sanitation Rules, 2021, and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan.

Spitting and Littering to Cost Offenders ₹250:

As part of the new sanitation rules, spitting in public places across Varanasi will now attract a fine of ₹250, officials confirmed. VMC Public Relations Officer Sandeep Srivastava said the initiative aims to enhance the city’s cleanliness and discourage unhygienic practices in public areas.

Fines for Littering, Feeding Stray Animals, and Pet Waste:-

Spitting or littering from a moving vehicle: ₹1,000

Leaving food for stray animals on streets: ₹250

Property owners keeping garbage for more than 24 hours or littering in public parks, roads, or dividers: ₹500

Pet owners not cleaning dog excrement in public spaces: ₹500

Dumping waste or animal remains in rivers, drains, or sewers: ₹750

Maximum Fine for Water Stagnation:-

The highest fine of ₹5,000 will be imposed on anyone creating water stagnation or unsanitary conditions that pose a threat to public health. Additionally, transporting garbage in uncovered vehicles or damaging municipal bins and vehicles will invite a penalty of ₹2,000.

Srivastava said the VMC’s initiative is part of continuous efforts to make Varanasi , Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency , a model for urban cleanliness and sanitation. The enforcement of these fines is expected to encourage responsible behavior and ensure cleaner public spaces.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan (Clean India Mission) is one of India’s largest nationwide campaigns for sanitation and hygiene.

Over the years, Swachh Bharat has become a symbol of India’s commitment to public health, sustainable tourism, and environmental conservation.
