Kargil, Ladakh: In a significant step towards strengthening climate resilience in the Himalayas, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil organized an academic interaction today as part of the ongoing international collaborative initiative.
The event, focusing on climate resilience in the Himalayan region, was chaired by Kacho Mohammad Feroz, the Executive Councillor for Tourism, KDA, PHE, and Irrigation, and saw participation from an esteemed delegation of professors and researchers from leading institutions across the globe.
Among the distinguished delegates were Prof. Alexander Sorkin and Sofia Bogosian from HSE University, Russia, as well as Dr. Richa Agarwal Malik, Dr. Chander Pal Singh, and Dr. Pardeep Singh from the University of Delhi.
Their presence underscored the international scope of the event, which aims to bring together academic minds to confront the pressing climate challenges faced by the region.
The session was also attended by Er. Punchok Tashi, Executive Councillor for RDD, ZDA & FCS&CA, and Zakir Hussain, Executive Councillor for Education, PDD & Mechanical, marking the support of local governance in driving climate action.
This interaction forms part of the International Summer School Programme titled “Confronting the Climate Challenge in the Indian Himalayas: Pathways to Resilience,” which is being held from the 7th to the 15th of July. Organized by the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Jammu, the University of Delhi, and the Higher School of Economics, Russia, the programme aims to foster academic collaboration and promote stakeholder engagement in building climate resilience in the Ladakh Himalayan region.
Through a series of lectures, workshops, and field interactions, the programme is designed to offer insights into climate-related challenges in the Indian Himalayas while focusing on developing pathways for resilience. With Ladakh’s unique geography and climate vulnerabilities, the initiative hopes to create a platform for knowledge exchange and practical solutions to safeguard the region’s future.
In the face of accelerating climate change, the academic interaction serves as an important step in bringing together research, policy, and local knowledge to shape effective climate action strategies for the Ladakh region and the broader Himalayan ecosystem.
The event and programme reflect the growing importance of international collaboration and local involvement in addressing climate challenges and building a sustainable future for the Himalayan communities.
