Green technology and affordable finance for development countries important to undertake climate action: PM Modi

Brazil: Prime Minister  Narendra Modi called for the transfer of “technology and affordable financing” for developing countries to be able to undertake climate change action.

Addressing a session on “Environment, COP-30 and Global Health” at Rio de jenreio in Brazil,the Prime Minister welcomed the adoption of the Framework Declaration on Climate Finance by the participating group, describing it as “an important step forward” in ensuring that commitments translate into tangible support for those most affected by climate change.

“In order to ensure that climate goals are not out of reach for the Global South, it is vital that technology is shared equitably and that financing is made accessible and affordable,” he said.

Speaking about the India’s approach on “Climate Justice” he said, ” India approached climate justice as a moral responsibility which it must fulfil”.

He also noted that for India, climate change was not just about dealing with energy issues, but one which impacts the balance between life and nature.

The Prime Minister also emphasized India’s commitment to sustainable growth, highlighting that the country has met its Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule while maintaining its status as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Reiterating India’s deep commitment to environmental action, he elaborated on the initiatives taken by it to promote pro-people and pro-planet growth and development, such as International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, Global Biofuels Alliance, International Big Cat Alliance, Mission Life, Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam  among others.

Elaborating on India’s commitment to green development, Prime Minister said, ” India has adopted the mantra of “One Earth, One Health” in providing support to countries, including during the covid pandemic”

” India had successfully implemented digital health schemes and was ready to share them with the global south countries. In this context, he welcomed the adoption of the declaration – BRICS Partnership for Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases” he said.

Over India took  over the Chair of BRICS next year,  Prime Minister stated that India would give priority to the global south in its agenda and focus on the people-centric and “humanity first” approach. 

“Under India’s presidency, it would endeavor to present BRICS in a new form and the acronym would stand for – Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability”.
