India meets Paris Agreement targets in time: PM Modi

Prime Minister was speaking on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations, and delivering his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in Delhi.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India’s contribution in the world’s fight against climate change and global warming, declaring that India is only country among the G20 nations, which achieved all the climate goals set at the Paris Agreement in 2015.

During his speech at 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister reiterated the India’s ambitious goal of achieving 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The agreement he referred to is a legally binding international treaty on climate change adopted by 196 organisations and nations at a United Nations summit

In 2022 India updated its NDC, according to which to reduce Emissions Intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030, from 2005 level

To achieve about 50 percent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030, with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance including from Green Climate Fund (GCF).

To create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030.

To better adapt to climate change by enhancing investments in development programmes in sectors vulnerable to climate change, particularly agriculture, water resources, Himalayan region, coastal regions, health and disaster management.
