No impact of Cyclone Mocha in India as it drift towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts: IMD

New Delhi: The India India Meteorological Department IMD on Thursday said that the cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ will not have any impact on Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, as it will move towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.

A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ on Thursday, which is over southeast Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 8 kmph during past 06 hours.

As per the IMD, cyclonic storm lay centred about 510 km west-southwest of Port Blair and 1,210 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

“It is very likely to move north-northwestwards and gradually intensify into a severe cyclonic storm around night of today, the 11th May” it said.

The Weather agency said it is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between around noon of 14th May, 2023 with maximum sustained wind speed of 140-150 kmph gusting to 165 kmph.

Giving more information, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said “the cyclonic storm is expected to intensify into a “severe cyclonic” storm by midnight tonight.”

” Cyclone Mocha will not have any impact on Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast and will move towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts”.

“However, the conditions will be very rough in the deep sea and we have given warning to suspend all types of small boat and fishing operation in southeast and central Bay of Bengal Bay and Andaman Sea till Sunday” he added.

The IMD also warned that extreme heatwave conditions would prevail over West Bengal, Konkan, North Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat till 12 May and abate thereafter.

Maximum temperatures are very likely to rise by 3-5°C over most parts of the country during next 3 days except over East India.

Due to humid air and high temperature, hot and discomfort weather is very likely over Konkan during next 3 days, over Odisha during next 5 days, Kerala and Tamil Nadu on 13 and 14 May.
