Low Pressure Area forms over Southeast Bay of Bengal, likely to develop into Cyclonic storm: IMD

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that a Low pressure area has formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea.
In a statement, the IMD said It is likely to intensify into a depression on May 9 over the same region.

The weather agency said it is likely to develop a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East Central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea on 10th of May.

It said the cyclonic storm is likely to move initially north-northwest wards towards east central Bay of Bengal till 11th May and thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.

If the cyclonic storm forms, it is likely to be named ‘Cyclone Mocha’.

The name ‘Mocha’, recommended by Yemen, originates from the Yemeni city Mocha (or Mokha), long known for its coffee trade.

The port city also gave its name to the famous Mocha coffee.

It has been predicted that there may be moderate rainfall at most places during these days, with scattered “heavy to very heavy” rainfall likely over Andaman & Nicobar Islands during 10th to 11th May.

Fishermen and small ships, boats and trawlers were advised not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea and adjoining the central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from Tuesday.

The IMD has said that sea conditions are likely to be rough over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the south Andaman Sea from today.

” It is likely to be very rough to high over southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 10th May onwards till 11th May” it said.

The Weather agency said, “It is likely to be high to very high over east central Bay of Bengal and very rough to the high adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea from 12th May”.
