Cyclonic storm likely to intensify in Bay of Bengal by tomorrow: IMD

New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a warning that a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal by tomorrow, May 6th, 2023.

“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region on May 7th, which may develop into a depression by May 8th” the weather agency said.

“The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm, moving nearly northwards towards the central Bay of Bengal”. The IMD said the details of its path and intensification to be provided after the formation of the low-pressure area.

In view of the “cyclogenesis” over the Bay of Bengal, light to moderate rainfall is expected at most places with isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 7th.

“The heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected during May 8th-10th, and the sea condition is likely to be rough on May 7th and very rough from May 8th onwards over the Southeast Bay of Bengal” it said.

The wind speed would gradually increase becoming 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea during May 8th and 9th .

In view of this the IMD, adviced the fishermen, small ships, boats, and trawlers are not to venture into the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from May 7th onwards and into the adjoining Central Bay of Bengal from May 9th onwards.

The IMD has also urged people to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this time.

In other event, a cyclonic Circulation lies over off coastal Tamil Nadu, will bring heavy rainfall very at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema on 05th May and over South Interior Karnataka & Kerala 08th & 09th May.

Over the heatwave, the IMD said, no heat wave conditions likely over any part of India during next 5 days. “Maximum temperatures are very likely to increase and become near normal over Northwest India by 07th May and over remaining parts of the country by 09th May” it said.
