Gujarat sets target to reduce carbon emission at 139 million tonnes by 2030

New Delhi: The Gujarat government on Sunday said that it has successfully reduced the total carbon emission of 90.09 million tonnes through renewable energy in the last 5 years and also set the target to reduce the emission at 139 million tonnes by 2030.

“The reason behind this achievement is the promotion of renewable energy by the state government.” “At present, Gujarat ranks second in the country in terms of installed capacity of renewable energy,” said the official statement.

The reduction in carbon emissions through renewable energy in Gujarat was 12.08 million tonnes in the year 2017-18, which has increased to 26.01 million tonnes in the year 2021-22.
The state government claimed that the growing installed capacity of renewable energy in Gujarat has directly impacted the environment and carbon emissions, which have seen a reduction of a whopping 115 percent as compared to 2017.

Talking about the contribution of the Department of Energy towards environmental protection on the occasion of World Environment Day, Ms. Shailja Vachhrajani, GM (RE & IPP), GUVNL, said, “We are striving to meet our growing energy demands with renewable energy. Our efforts have also significantly contributed to improving the environment.

“Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has instructed the departments that we should ensure that Gujarat contributes the most to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s resolve to make India a 0% carbon emission country by 2070,” she said.
The Energy Department has set a target for a reduction in carbon emissions generated through energy production at 139 million tonnes by 2030.
“To this end, the state government will increase the installed capacity of renewable energy to 68,000 MW by the year 2030,” it said.

According to the statement, due to the higher increase in installed capacity of renewable energy, the dependence on the conventional mode of power generation is reduced.
The share of renewable energy (along with hydro energy) was 29% with 8,065 MW of installed capacity of power generation in Gujarat in the year 2017-18.

Now, in the year 2022, the share of renewable energy has increased to 42% with the contribution of 17,367 MW to the installed capacity of electricity generation.
