IRENA can play vital role to attain India’s enhanced climate goal : Bhupender Yadav

New Delhi: Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav said that the International Renewable Energy Agency, IRENA, can play a very vital role in India’s efforts towards attainment of the enhanced climate goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP 26.

The Union Minister stated this while meeting with H.E. Mr. Francesco La Camera, Director General, International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) here on Tuesday.

Acknowledging IRENA’s global experience on renewable energy, the Minister said that the dignitaries of IRENA’s can contribute to the G-20 during India’s Presidency and added that it is a “golden opportunity for both India and IRENA on how renewable energy can accelerate”.

” India’s Presidency of G-20 is a golden opportunity for both India and IRENA on how Renewable Energy can accelerate Industry Transition of hard to abate sectors, but without compromising the development aspirations of the developing countries and leaving no one behind” he said.

India will hold the Presidency of the G20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023, culminating with the G20 Summit in India in 2023. G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation that plays an important role in global economic governance.

Union Cabinet, in Feburary 2022 approved the setting up of a G20 Secretariat and its reporting structures, which will be responsible for implementation of overall policy decisions and arrangements needed for steering India’s forthcoming G20 Presidency.

As per practice, a G20 Secretariat is being established to handle work relating to substantive / knowledge / content, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India’s G20 Presidency.

The G20 Secretariat will enable long term capacity building, including knowledge and expertise, for India’s leadership on global issues in multilateral fora.

During the meeting both the leaders also deliberated on other issues of mutual interest including strengthening engagement between IRENA and India.

The Union Environment Minister also underlined that we may also look beyond G-20 and the existing arrangements while strengthening engagement between IRENA and India. IRENA may also explore how it can also be part of CDRI and LeadIT, which are spearheaded by India.

Both sides also discussed the importance of providing means of implementation including finance, technology transfer and capacity building support for achieving enhanced climate goals by the developing countries like India.
