World Water Day: PM Modi urges people to save every drop of water

New Delhi : On World Water Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the country’s commitment to “save every drop of water,” saying it is heartening to see water conservation become a mass movement in recent years.

He also highlighted measures like the Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure conservation and access to clean drinking water for the citizens.

On this occasion, he has also appreciated all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.

“On World Water Day, let’s reaffirm our pledge to save every drop of water. Our nation is undertaking numerous measures like the Jal Jeevan Mission to ensure water conservation and access to clean drinking water for our citizens, “he tweeted.

He added that “Over the last few years, it has become a mass movement, with innovative efforts taking place in all parts of the nation. I would like to appreciate all those individuals and organisations who are working towards saving water.”

He also encourages people to work together to conserve water for a more sustainable planet.

“Together, let’s further water conservation and contribute to a sustainable planet. Every drop saved helps our people and enhances our progress” he tweeted.

The Central Government, in partnership with the States, is implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) to make provision for potable tap water supply to every rural household in the country at a service level of 55 litres per capita per day by 2024.

According to the Jal Shakti Ministry, in the last 2.5 years, the government has provided tap water to over 6 crore families across the country. Around 63,000 houses are connected to tap water every day.

As of now, around 1.4 million villages are under Har Ghar Jal. The Ministry said under the Jal Jeeven Mission, over 9 crore rural households will be provided with tap water till March 2022.

World Water Day is held annually on March 22nd as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis in support of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

In the year 2022, World Water Day will be celebrated under the theme “Ground: Making the invisible visible.”

The tradition has continued since 1993. According to the United Nations website, more than 2.2 billion people live without access to safe water.

This year, the day is highlighting the global water crisis and aims to support achieving sustainable water and sanitation for all by 2030. The concept and idea for this day go back all the way to 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development took place.
