New Delhi: In the spirit of civic pride and environmental responsibility, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched an “Intensive ” across its jurisdiction on Monday with the objective of making New Delhi clean, green and dust-free.
To success the campaign, NDMC Chairman Keshav Chandra directed all Nodal Officers at the level of Head of Departments for specific responsibilities for the activities.
The Chairman, NDMC regularly visiting one Sanitation Zone per day to monitor the on ground situation of the area for effective measures to be taken for the betterment of the area in respect of hygiene and sanitation terms. Chairman, NDMC also directed the Head of Department to be in touch with RWAs, MTAs to apprise the schedule of Mechanised Road Sweepers (MRS) operations in their respective areas.
To ensure effective monitoring and accountability, NDMC has designated 14 Heads of Departments as Nodal Officers, each responsible for one sanitation circle. These officers will supervise field activities, coordinate staff deployment, monitor sanitation efforts and ensure daily reporting and compliance.
During this season, collection of dry leaves poses a major challenge for sanitation teams. A significant portion of daily waste comprises dry leaves collected from main roads, footpaths, avenue roads, back lanes, markets, green belts and residential areas daily in routine for further disposal to make compost.
The 4 Mechanised Road Sweepers (MRS) are deployed at NDMC area avenue roads to mitigate the challenge of dry leaves falling. As a part of dust control by the MRS these are also sweeping the roads and pavements regularly in the two shifts daily.
These are also working in the night to reduce the falling trees from the roads. These leaves are processed into compost which is later distributed among residents for horticulture and gardening purposes, thereby promoting sustainable waste management practices.
The Schedule of the operation of MRS are available on the website to all residents and it will be routinely communicated RWAs and MTAs. Although the MRS operations are monitored round the clock monitored by the NDMC Command and Control Center but NDMC is appealing to the general public to watch its functioning and give their suggestions and complaints, if any to improve their operations and functioning for mitigate the target.
The scope of the cleanliness activities under the campaign includes removal of garbage and construction debris, cleaning of parks, underpasses, schools, government buildings and places of worship, repair and maintenance of footpaths, cleaning of storm water and roadside drains, pruning of trees and shrubs for improved visibility and air quality and repainting of walls, medians and boundary structures to enhance the overall aesthetics of New Delhi.
Four Mechanical Road Sweepers operating in two shifts with GPS tracking carry out wet sweeping and cover an average of about 7,338 kilometres of roads every month, with operations monitored round the clock through the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Palika Kendra.
To further reduce airborne dust particles, eight mobile anti-smog guns have been deployed across NDMC roads along with one static anti-smog gun at Pt. Pant Marg. Ten anti smog gun deployed on the private high rise building while 10 has been installed on NDMC high rise buildings. 30 anti smog gun have been deployed at Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar construction site.
Additionally, 20 water tankers and trolleys with capacities ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 litres are regularly used for water sprinkling on roads, trees and shrubs using treated water from sewage treatment plants to control dust pollution.
Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste generated in the NDMC area is collected daily and transported to the Okhla C&D Waste Recycling Plant, with an average of around 39.30 metric tonnes processed every day, while 14 designated sites have been identified within the NDMC area for systematic collection of such waste.
NDMC also deployed16 High-pressure jetting machines along with 150 soft and hard iron brushes, 150 wipers and 27 wet mopping machines along with cleaning agents for removal of sticky and oily substances were deployed for markets, coridors and plazas, roads, footpaths, kerb stones, central verges and signages. Adequate standby machines kept available to avoid disruption of operations.
As many as 17 mist sprays systems installed at Lodhi Road, Shanti path and Africa avenue roads to mitigate the road dust and pollution along with additional 1323 poles in 29 km length of 24 roads. 96 fountains installed on the various roundabouts and parks to increase the quality of air and dust mitigation.
Through this intensive sanitation campaign, NDMC reiterates its commitment to improving urban cleanliness, controlling dust pollution and enhancing environmental sustainability while encouraging active participation from citizens to collectively build a cleaner, greener and healthier New Delhi.
