New Delhi: Ahead of World Wetlands Day on February 2, India has added two more sites to the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance, strengthening the country’s global commitment to wetland conservation.
Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh and Chhari-Dhand wetland in the Kutch region of Gujarat have been included under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty aimed at protecting wetlands and promoting their sustainable use.
Patna Bird Sanctuary, spread around a perennial lake, is a vital habitat for resident and migratory birds, particularly during the winter months. Chhari-Dhand, a seasonal salt marsh near the Great Rann of Kutch, is known for its rich biodiversity and serves as an important stopover for migratory species, including flamingos and other waterbirds.
The inclusion of these sites highlights their ecological significance and is expected to boost conservation efforts, scientific research, and community-led sustainable practices in the regions.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India’s Ramsar network has expanded by over 276%, from 26 sites in 2014 to 98 sites at present.
He stated that the international recognition reflects India’s strong commitment to protecting the environment and conserving its wetlands.
The Minister informed that the two wetlands provide habitat to hundreds of migratory and resident bird species. The areas are also home to wildlife such as chinkara, wolves, caracal, desert cats and desert foxes, besides endangered birds.
India became a signatory to the Ramsar Convention in 1982 and has since steadily expanded its network of internationally recognised wetlands. The latest additions come as the country prepares to mark World Wetlands Day, which underscores the role of wetlands in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and livelihoods.
Environmental experts say the move reflects growing recognition of wetlands as critical ecosystems that require long-term protection amid increasing pressures from urbanisation, pollution, and climate change
India is one of the Contracting Parties to the ‘Convention on Wetlands’, known as the Ramsar Convention, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. India became a signatory to the convention on 1st February 1982.
Wetlands of particular conservation value can be designated as Wetlands of International Importance. These sites are significant as they can serve as model examples of the nation’s commitment to conservation and management under internationally accepted frameworks.
