Delhi-NCR chokes as air pollution turns hazardous; GRAP-4 curbs enforced

New Delhi: Delhi-NCR plunged into a public health emergency on Tuesday as air pollution soared to extremely dangerous levels, forcing authorities to impose the strictest Stage-4 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped into the “severe” to “hazardous” category, breaching the 500 mark in several pockets, including Noida and Greater Noida.

With toxic smog engulfing the region, the entry of trucks and other heavy vehicles into Delhi has been restricted, while officials cautioned that the odd-even vehicle rationing scheme could be rolled out if air quality fails to improve.

Construction activities and other polluting operations have also come under tighter scrutiny.

The worsening pollution has severely disrupted daily life. Dense smog drastically reduced visibility, slowing traffic across major roads and highways and raising the risk of accidents.

Hospitals reported a spike in patients complaining of breathing difficulties, eye irritation and persistent cough, particularly among children and the elderly.

As a precautionary measure, schools across parts of NCR have shifted to hybrid learning models, with online classes for many students.

In Noida and Greater Noida, authorities ordered the closure of schools from nursery to Class 5, citing serious health concerns for young children.
Public anger is mounting as residents struggle with the recurring pollution crisis.

Many questioned the effectiveness of long-term preventive measures and called for stronger action against major pollution sources, including vehicular emissions, construction dust and industrial activity.

Environmental experts warn that unless immediate and sustained steps are taken, the region could continue to witness prolonged spells of hazardous air, posing grave risks to public health.

Authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and will escalate measures if pollution levels remain critical.
