New Delhi: Chairing a key meeting on Thursday, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav reaffirmed that the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) is a flagship global conservation initiative envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, built on “trust, mutual respect and shared responsibility.”
Mr Yadav underscored the vital ecological role of the world’s seven major big cats , tigers, lions, snow leopards, cheetahs, leopards, pumas and jaguars, noting that they are not just iconic species but apex predators that regulate ecological balance and serve as indicators of ecosystem health.
“We aim at working together to improve their habitat through capacity building and knowledge sharing for the green growth of the entire area,” he said.
With India set to host the Global Big Cats Summit in New Delhi in 2026, the Minister invited all big-cat range countries to share their strategies, experiences and best practices for conserving these species and their habitats.
He also extended a formal invitation to all nations harbouring big cats to join IBCA and deepen global cooperation.
The Minister said the Alliance offers a common platform “to share your strengths, to learn from each other, and contribute to a global partnership that protects species, safeguards ecosystems, and builds climate resilience for generations to come.”
The Minister informed that IBCA has now entered its next phase. With its Secretariat established in New Delhi, 18 countries have formally joined the Alliance, 3 countries have Observer Status, and several international organizations are contributing to the shared mission.
