Merino emphasis to forest conservation for greener tomorrow

In a country like India, where rapid urbanization is reshaping ecosystems, preserving and expanding green cover is a necessity, and not a mere choice anymore. World Forestry Day serves as a reminder of the crucial role trees play in balancing ecology, and companies like Merino are stepping up to drive
impactful afforestation efforts.

Beyond Manufacturing: Merino’s Green Vision

For Merino, sustainability is an ingrained philosophy. Recognizing the importance of afforestation in carbon reduction, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration, the company has taken a proactive approach to increasing green cover across its operations.
At its manufacturing units in Hapur and Halol, Merino has planted over 1,000 new trees within factory premises, creating micro-ecosystems that enhance local air quality and support diverse flora and fauna. These green belts serve as natural carbon sinks, absorbing pollutants while providing shelter to native bird species that have begun nesting in these rejuvenated spaces.

Scaling Green Cover: Agroforestry & the Miyawaki Method

Merino’s approach to afforestation isn’t limited to its own spaces. Through its agroforestry initiatives, the company distributes over one crore saplings annually to farmers, enabling sustainable wood sourcing for production of FABWOOD, Merino’s E1 Grade Chipboards – while strengthening rural livelihoods. This initiative ensures that afforestation efforts extend beyond factory premises and into
community arenas, promoting a circular economy where nature and industry grow together.

Additionally, Merino has pioneered the use of the Miyawaki afforestation method, planting over 20,000 trees in areas surrounding its facilities. This technique accelerates forest growth by up to ten times, resulting in dense, self-sustaining green patches that enhance soil fertility, retain groundwater, and provide critical wildlife habitats. Moreover, Merino also facilitates Bamboo plantation across its
premises, which helps with enhancing air quality in the area.

Over 5 acres of land has been allocated for the same at the Garh Mukteshwar Farm. As a result, Bamboo groves have grown in the area, thus helping Merino strengthen its bond with nature.

Nirmal Program: Rooted in Responsibility

Guiding these initiatives is Merino’s Nirmal Program, which is based on the philosophy of “Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah” – one who protects the environment is protected by it. Under this initiative, the company integrates afforestation with broader sustainability goals, ensuring that industrial progress never comes at the cost of environmental well-being.
