World Water Day 2024: ‘Leveraging Water for Peace’

New Delhi: World Water Day is celebrating today (March 22), to raise awareness about the conservation and significance of fresh water in our lives.

The day also aims to raise awareness about the importance of saving water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis.

This Year’s World Water Day will focus on the theme, ‘Leveraging Water for Peace’.

A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Access to water is a human right yet, 2.2 billion live without safely managed drinking water services, with devastating impacts on their lives and wider society.

As per United Nations achieving universal coverage by 2030 will require a six-fold increase in current rates of progress for safely managed drinking water, a five-fold increase for safely managed sanitation, and a three-fold increase for basic hygiene services.

The agency in its report informed that 2.2 billion still live without safely managed drinking water, including 115 million people who drink surface water.

As per the IPCC 2022 report, roughly half of the world’s population is experiencing severe water scarcity for at least part of the year.

World Water Day history:

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly decided that a day should be dedicated to creating awareness about the conservation and significance of fresh water in our lives. Since 1993, March 22 has been observed as World Water Day.
