EU countries agree to globally phase out fossil fuel ahead of COP28

New Delhi: To fight against climate change, the Twenty seven  European Member countries have agreed to promote “global fossil fuel phase out” on Thursday.

The decision was taken ahead of COP 28  UN Climate conference which will be held later this year in November in Dubai UAE.

The member countries have approved a text ahead of the COP28 summit and said  “the shift towards a climate neutral economy will require the global phase-out of unabated fossil fuels,”.

“The EU will systematically promote and call for a global move towards energy systems free of unabated fossil fuels well ahead of 2050”, it said, adding that global fossil fuel consumption should peak in the near term.

Europe is in the midst of transforming its energy system to meet climate targets and end decades of reliance on Russian fossil fuels.

The text said countries should combine the two aims and use renewable energy or energy savings – rather than fossil fuels – to replace Russian energy.

The agreementcame after a month, after the European Parliament gave its final approval to a ban on new sales of carbon-emitting petrol and diesel cars by 2035.

This will also support the European Union’s ambitious plan to become a “climate neutral” economy by 2050, with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
