India, UNDP launches framework to understand concept of LiFE

Sharm El-Sheikh: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav launched the MoEFCC – UNDP Compendium “Prayaas Se Prabhaav Tak” – From Mindless Consumption to Mindful Utilization’’ on the sidelines of COP27 in Egypt on Monday.

The compendium was launched during an event based on Understanding the Concept of LiFE- Lifestyle for Environment, held at India Pavilion at COP 27, in the presence of Inger Andersen, Executive Secretary, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Ovais Sarmad, Deputy Executive Secretary, UNFCCC and other dignitaries

The compendium highlights India’s traditional best practices and key behaviour change frameworks. It also proposes a LiFE framework to move towards mindful utilization of resources.

Addressing the event, the Minister said, “the world is at a critical juncture in the joint fight against climate change, a juncture which requires not just government effort but the contribution from all stakeholders, each individual, towards ensuring a sustainable and equitable planet”

“The mantra of LiFE, Life style for environment given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi places individual contribution at the centre stage to find solution to problems posed by climate change” he said.

Talking about Mission LiFE, Yadav said that it is a global mass movement which promotes environmentally conscious lifestyles at the individual level, adding that one must understand that climate change goes beyond just policy-making and its effects transcend geopolitical borders.

“In our LiFE time campaign is a great way to encourage youth to become the ambassadors of sustainable lifestyle practices and grow into leaders that lead the way in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management” the Minister added.

The Minister said the campaign will involve more youth in the conversation about climate change, adaptation and mitigation, and provide them a platform to share their concerns, issues and solutions with the leaders of the world.

The campaign gives a global call for ideas from youth across the world who are passionate about living environment conscious lives.

The youth will be encouraged to submit their climate actions that contribute to lifestyles for the environment within their capacity, which are sustainable and scalable, and serve as good practices that can be shared globally.
