Delhi government to construct country’s first E-waste Eco park

New Delhi: To manage the waste in a single place, the Delhi government has decided to develop E-Waste Eco-park in Holambi Kalan in Delhi.

The park will be the first of its kind in the country, spread over an area of about 21 acres.

To give the final shape to this project Environment Minister Gopal Rai held a joint review meeting with the officials of the Environment Department and DPCC regarding the construction of the park.

“To expedite the construction of the E-Waste Eco Park, an 11-person Stirring Committee has been formed. DSIIDC has been made its implementing agency” said Gopal Rai.

He informed that “additionally, in order to rapidly complete the development of the E-Waste Eco Park, the concerned agency has been asked to appoint a consultant as soon as possible. And it will take an estimated time of about 23 months to develop India’s first E-Waste Eco Park.”

Every year, Delhi produces over 2 lakh tonnes of e-waste or about 9.5 percent of the total amount produced in India.

With this, Delhi is now the fifth-largest producer of e-waste in India, behind Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The Minister said, only 5 percent of the generated e-waste is properly recycled and we are bringing India’s first E-Waste Eco Park to Delhi for that reason.

“By E-waste Eco Park we refer to the establishment of a place where this e-waste is dismantled, refurbished, recycled, and manufactured in a manner that is scientifically and environmentally sound” he added.

“The E-Waste Eco Park that will be created in Delhi will leave a different image of Delhi not just in India but also around the world. Also, the development of this E-waste Eco Park will drastically reduce the pollution caused by e-waste” Rai said.
