Ladakh to become carbon neutral by 2050: CEC

Ladakh: To make the Ladakh, a carbon netural region, the local administration on Thursday initiated the distribution of solar water heater to the beneficiaries, an initiative by the local administration to reduce the carbon emission in the region.

“The use of Solar Water Heaters shall help in saving tons of carbon dioxide thus ultimately helping in making Ladakh UT a Carbon Neutral region, which is the dream of our PM Narendra Modi” said CEC LAHDC Kargil  Feroz Ahmad Khan , while participating in the event.

Encouraging the local people to use more renewable products, Khan said “not only the solar water heater, but the LAHDC has also kept many other renewable energy devices within the Subsidy Scheme, such as Solar Street Light, Solar High mast and Solar Home lighting System.
LAHDC-Kargil had proposed Solar Water Heaters of 100 and 200 LPD to procure and provide under subsidy scheme through Councillors quota procured by Kargil Renewable Energy Development Agency Kargil.

The scheme had to implement on the basis of 25:75 share where under the 25 percent cost of the Solar Water Heaters has to be borne by the beneficiary while as the rest 75 percent cost has been sanctioned under the scheme.

Feroz Khan highlighted that the renewable energy devices and systems distributed by KREDA are purely eco-friendly, boosting economy apart from living a healthy and comfortable life.

LAHDC is committed and targeted to make the region Carbon Neutral by the year 2050 and this year again such renewable energy systems shall be proposed under subsidy and other relevant scheme, to be distributed among the public, he added.

Project Director/CEO KREDA, Kacho Ahmed Khan thanked the CEC, Executive Councilors, Councilors and other dignitaries and guests for sparing their valuable time and attending the function and also expressed his gratitude to DC Kargil Santosh Sukhadeve for keeping their faith over KREDA for execution of the scheme and it was assured to complete the scheme successfully.

The Centre government has already started various renewable energy initiatives under the Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency.

Recently the  Union Territory of Ladakh decided to provide 20,000 acres of land at Pang to set up 10 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy projects.

The plan involves setting up 10 GW of large green energy capacity in the strategic region comprising of solar and wind parks and use these large battery units to store that electricity to supply to rest of the country through a transmission link.
